Ischio-femoral Arthrodesis for Tuberculosis of the Hip.
نویسنده
چکیده
Brittain described a method of ischio-femoral arthrodesis in 1941, and in 1948 reported successful fusion in eighty-four of 105 hips. Comparable figures were reported by Freiberg (1946) in six cases, by Foley (1949) in nineteen cases and by Cholmeley (1956) in fifty-five cases. The purpose of this paper is to review the cases of sixty-four patients who underwent arthrodesis of the hip at Wrightington Hospital during the period 1949 to 1958. In all but two patients the diagnosis of tuberculosis was established by guinea-pig inoculation, by demonstration of tubercle bacilli on the direct smear, or by culture. In one child infection was caused by pyogenic organisms and in one other the diagnosis remained unproven, though the clinical course suggested tuberculosis and the Mantoux test was positive.

Ischio-femoral arthrodesis of the hip in tuberculosis; an anterior approach.
The operation to be described here is a modification of the ischio-femorai arthrodesis described by Brittain (1942). It is performed through an anterior incision, deepened so as to expose the upper part of the shaft of the femur and the ischium. Iliac bone grafts are inserted under direct vision. The evolution of this method of fusing the hip for tuberculous artilritis will be described briefly...

In 1932 Trumble described “ A method of fixation of the hip joint b ’ means of all extra-articular bone graft,” and reported three cases, all with successful results. In a late’r paper (1937) he reported five further cases: four were successful, hut in one the graft faile’d to fuse with the ischium, allowing slight though painless movement at the hip joint. Four subsequent operations were all s...
متن کاملIschio-femoral arthrodesis of the hip by posterior open approach.
I have been much impressed by the rapidity and solidity of the extra-articular fusion of the hip joint that develops after osteotomy of the upper femoral shaft with insertion between the cut femoral surfaces of a strong and wide tibial graft which is driven into the ischium, as described by Brittain (1942). During the years 1942-44 I carried out the procedure described by Trumble (1937). A tibi...
متن کاملHip Arthrodesis with the Anterolateral Plate: An Innovating Technique for an Orphaned Procedure
BACKGROUND In developing countries hip osteoarthritis constitutes a major public health issue as it is highly prevalent in all age ranges of population, including the young. It often remains untreated because of the low accessibility of total hip prostheses. Hip arthrodesis still represents a major treatment option, but, for several reasons which are discussed in this paper, is nowadays infrequ...
